New! 100th Anniversary of "Swann's Way"

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of "Swann's Way," the first volume in Proust's "In Search of Lost Time," events, seminars, and readings were held all over the world. RadioProust's Larry Bensky discusses Proust, the anniversary, and a Northern California commemorative event, in this interview with Michael Krasny, host of NPR affiliate KQED in San Francisco.

Music by Faure, Hahn, Debussy, Saint Saens, Chopin, Schubert and Elliott Carter, and bilingual readings from “In Search of Lost Time.” A performance in Berkeley, California as part of world-wide commemorations of the 100th anniversary of “Swann’s Way’s” publication, November 14th 1913. Created, directed, produced and hosted by RadioProust’s Larry Bensky.

"Proust's Musical World"

Music by Camille Saint-Saens, Cesar Franck, and Claude Debussy, performed by pianist Sandra Moubarak and cellist Anthony Leroy at an open air concert in Paris, August 2012.  Proust texts on music read in French by Didier Sandre, with English subtitles.

"The Vinteuil Sonata"

Proust invented a composer, Vinteuil, in order to write about the emotions generated by profoundly evocative music.  Proust himself wrote letters saying that there were elements of Faure, Saint-Saens, Franck, Schubert, and Wagner, among others,  in his mind as he wrote about Vinteuil. Many writers and musicologists have tried to reproduce what the sounds of Vinteuil might have been. In this video, we hear one of the most unusual efforts, the rarely heard "Vinteuil Sonata" by Claude Pascal (1946) in a recent Paris performance.
